The Gary Hart Memorial Trophy

9 holes at Falkland Golf Club

Tuesday July 31st 2012 - 6pm

Pairs event - shotgun start

Earlier in 2012, Gary, a friend of St. Andrews Golf Groups, suddenly passed away in Western Australia.
Having spoken to Garys family in Leeds, Yorkshire, they have agreed that we can hold an annual event in memory of Gary.

For those who knew Gary, either in the real world, or via Facebook, knew him as a man that enjoyed a bit of fun and frolics, and was the life and soul of the party.

Gary would have loved the Barbeque and beer we will be partaking in, I'm sure he will be smiling down on us from the fairways of heaven.

The event has been organised around the Facebook Community Golf Open, so that a lot of Garys friends who are attending can take part and celebrate Garys life.

Transport has been organised from St. Andrews, departing at 4.45pm and will leave Falkland at 11pm so that everyone can enjoy a beer or 2.. or 3!

Entry is £20 per person which will include Barbeque
Cost of Transport from St. Andrews is £10 per person and will leave at 5pm
Falkland Golf Club members will be £10 per person.

If you would like to participate, please email golfgroups@aol.com

Falkland Golf Club is a wonderful 9 hole ''community golf course''  20 miles from the Home of Golf, where a warm welcome is always assured, Gary had always said he would have loved to play here.

Please like Falkland Golf Club on Facebook @ www.facebook.com/PlayFGC

The chosen Charity for the event

All funds raised through this evening will be going to Simon Buckden, an ex-soldier who was forced to leave the Army due to suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

In order to raise awareness of PTSD Simon came up with the mad idea to run 100 marathons in 100 weeks!

While doing this, Simon himself has found out that he has got cancer, but is still continuing with this incredible challenge. Read more here www.raceto100.co.uk/

St Andrews Dukes - Course Guide - Hole 1

Hole 1 - The Dukes

Highland

Par - 5

Men - 473 yards
Women - 416 yards
Stroke index - 10

Pro Tip - From the tee, the fairway bunker on the left side of the fairway is the best line, providing a great angle to lay up the right side which opens up the approach to the green.

The approach is well protected by bunker complexes short right and greenside left.

Large, fast, but true greens are at the end of the hole, and are always well protected, the 1st hole is no different, to walk off this hole with a couple of stableford points is a well done fete !
Accuracy is the key to a good round at the Dukes.

  • Carts are available, and can be pre -booked on request at £40 each
  • Caddies - If you require a caddie for this, or all 3 of your rounds, please do not hesitate to contact us, and we can arrange it for you

Hole 1 is sponsored by the Barbers Pole. St. Andrews.

A welcome from Event Manager. St. Andrews Golf Groups.

A welcome from Event Manager.
St. Andrews Golf Groups.

Hello everyone!!

Just a quick introduction about myself, and my own love affair with St. Andrews, and the background to how the Facebook Community Golf Open was born.

My love affair with St. Andrews started in the early 1970's when I was brought up to Scotland, from my native Yorkshire, as a young child on holidays and played at least 3 rounds a day on the links!

In the 1980's and into the 90's  I joined the Royal Air Force, and was based a lot nearby at RAF Leuchars, where I enjoyed being a member of the RAF Leuchars Golf Society.

In 1995 having learnt to cut hair in the first Gulf war (ask me the story if you are attending the Facebook Community Golf Open!) I created the Barber's Pole in South Street, St. Andrews, famed for giving away a free nip of whisky with every haircut!

In 2003, St. Andrews Golf Groups was born. The aim was to get tourists to experience St. Andrews by staying here for longer. Far too often I met tourists who were only here for a day or two, how on earth can you experience St. Andrews in such a short time!
Championship golf courses galore, and never short of something to do.

In 2008, I was very proud to organise the Centenary event for the Society of Liverpool Golf Captains, almost 300 golfers.
It was a real honour to have been involved in such a prestigious event!
Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine sitting at the top table with the Provost of Fife!

The Captains event is where the seed was sewn for Facebook Community Golf Open.

The event has been a year in preparing to get to the stage where we are happy that everything is ready. Its been very demanding, and difficult at times, but at long last its time to get the show on the road
Many have already signed up, we have been working hard to get letterheads, and the email database set up, so if you have entered, expect to be receiving regular updates and news soon, and we will get you added to the participants page!

Facebook are happy with the naming of the event (at long last!) as we have had to add the word ''community'' to the name, but was quite good to hear that ''Facebook management were excited about the event''

Full details of the Facebook Community Golf Open can be found here.   www.facebook.com/open2012

Working together with many of my fellow business colleagues in St. Andrews, we aim to give you  the experience of a lifetime!

Follow this blog as we count down from 100 days to go !!!
Some days will have some exciting news as we prepare to take to the fairways of St. Andrews!!

And a special thank you to Lorenza :) x

Yours in golf!
